If Not Now Then When

If not now, then when?

For people whose lives are working and whose plans are not.

It started when one person asked himself that and could not answer it comfortably. Everything below is what happened after.

Make the pledge

What has actually happened

The receipts, in order

  1. 2022

    The question

First job out of school. The job was fine — that is the harder part to explain. The things he said he would build were still on a list, and he had started describing them as things he would get to.

  2. 2023

    The name

If Not Now Then When, written down as an idea, four years before anyone else could see anything.

  3. 2025

    The company

Incorporated. The phrase trademarked. Nothing to show for it yet.

  4. 2026

    The clothes

Around fifty units a drop, quarterly, made in Canada, Portugal and China. The product has to stand on its own: if you would not wear it without the meaning, the meaning has failed.

  5. June 2026

    The room

An eighteen by ten foot room near Trinity Bellwoods, open for five hours. Sixty-eight people reserved a time to come.

  6. 2026

    The studio

INNTW Studios — the same work done for other people's brands, on other people's deadlines.

  7. Now

    This

The part that is not finished. It is the newest thing here and the least proven, and it is the reason the pledge below exists.

The founder’s own account of the question is on INNTW Origin.

What it believes

Five things, and one of them is uncomfortable

The enemy is later.
Its accomplice is comfort. Nobody intervenes when you are fine, which is why being fine is the harder problem.
You are probably not failing.
A functioning life is the most effective anaesthetic there is. There is no rock bottom to react to — only a slow substitution of the life you meant to have for one that merely works.
The question is older than the brand.
People have asked some version of it in kitchens and at three in the morning. It belongs to no one. What can be answered for is what happens after it.
What does not work gets published too.
A project about honesty over deferral cannot show only the months that went well.
Urgency is not a tactic here.
No countdown that is not real, no last chance that is not last. The runs are small, and that is the only reason they sell out.

Who it is for

There is a specific feeling this is for.

Not being lost. Having a life that works, and a private list of things you said you would do, and noticing the distance between the two.

If you recognised yourself in that, you are in the right place.

The pledge

Proof it works on other people

The people who did it

Published as they go, including the ones it did not work for.

Nobody has finished yet. The first spotlight goes up when somebody does, and it will say plainly whether it worked.
